What a wash out!

At this point I'd like to tell you all about the great holiday we just had in beautiful, sunny Devon - but I can't - because we didn't!

We were all booked up to go down for a week in the caravan, we had found this great site overlooking the river Dart, just down from the picturesque town of Dartmouth and with great views across the river. I was really looking forward to lovely evenings with great views & sunsets and days spent exploring the Torbay area, Dartmoor and the South Hams. One of the most beautiful areas in the UK.

Sadly it was not to be. The British Weather decided to do it's damndest and it became obvious by lunchtime on Saturday that it would be a complete waste of time to go. There was even a Severe Weather Warning put out for Devon with torrential rain and gale force winds forecast for pretty much the entire week.

So after some discussion and with the thought of trying to cope with 2 soaking wet dogs in a fairly small caravan every time they had to be taken for walks, and no chance of glorious views or sunsets etc., we sadly came to the conclusion there was nothing for it but to cancel the holiday and stay at home!

The only consolation has been the conviction we did the right thing as we stare out of the window at the lashing rain and the wind bending the trees. At least we are warm and dry and comfy cosy even if the British Summer has forsaken us. We just have to hope the week we have booked in September in the Lake District will prove better (she says optimistically - but don't hold your breath!).

New Blog Launched! : News, Views, Thrills & Spills

I am delighted to announce the launch of my new Blog - News, Views, Thrills & Spills. This will be exclusively for non personal posts while 'Tails of Terror' will be retained for personal postings. Old non personal postings have now been removed from this blog, but are now available on the new one. Please visit my new neighbourhood. Hope to see you there soon :-)

This has been an interesting experience as when I made the decision to split off the non personal stuff I thought I would try a Wordpress.com hosted blog. I transferred all the old posts from Blogger ok, but when I started building the page I realised just how restricting Wordpress is, particularly with what you can put on the sidebar. So I made the decision to start another on Blogger and have now transferred back all the posts that I'd put on Wordpress to the new News, Views, Thrills & Spills blog which is now up and running.

I then made the mistake of thinking that as I liked the new template so much I'd use it for this blog. After hours of wrestling with all the settings and code, losing all my widgets and generally tearing my hair out I came to the conclusion that this WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA!! I have now reinstated most of my widgets, but I've lost all the visitor locations on Clustrmaps so have to start again!

Blog has New Look - the pink is gone!

I've been working on a new look for the Blog for nearly a week now as I felt it was about time I got rid of the pink - not everyones taste I know! Having trawled through a large number of possible replacement backgrounds I initially settled on a rather busy modern arty one and used a light turquoise for the body colour. I rather enjoyed the fun of this for several days (some of you may have seen it if you have popped in recently), but really it was far too busy and distracting and really detracted from the blog itself. I have got quite good at editing the html of my blog now

So today, I determined to find something more cool, calm and collected. I started by choosing a body colour and went through a whole gamut of options before settling on the one you see (Hex colour FFFFCC), a lovely soft creamy shade and definitely easier on the eyes than previous colours!

Next on the agenda was to find a background that would look nice with the cream. After much searching and trial runs I settled on this lovely one of blue spheres and stars from www.moobackgrounds.com. I think the effect is rather nice. I have also pruned several of the wigets from my sidebar so it is not so busy, only keeping those I really like. What do you think? Is it an improvement, do you find it easy to look at and read? I would love to know so please leave a comment if you like it (or even if you don't!).

I Come a Cropper in the Caravan!

Well last weekend was a Bank Holiday here so we decided to make it a nice long one and booked the friday off as well. Thursday evening we were packing the caravan ready to drive up to Bridgnorth that evening and I was carrying an armful of clothes up the steps when suddenly my whole world started tipping sideways and I came off them with a hell of a crash, landing on the ground with one leg inside the caravan and my head and the other leg hitting the deck so hard I couldn't move for several minutes. Hubby had been standing in the porch behind me and saw me go but couldnt do anything to stop me. He says he saw my head hit the ground and was waiting for the blood to start pouring out, thinking 'oh well, it's off to A & E, that's the end of the caravan trip!' But I'm a tough old bird and have had several nasty falls in the past, including one where I put my head through a glass door! but always seem to get away with nothing worse than some bad bruising. ( I think I must have been a cat in a previous life and saved up some of my nine lives to carry over!). Anyway after a sit down for half an hour and a cup of tea to calm my nerves while hubby packed the rest of the van we were off - or so we thought!

When we tried switching on the motor of the brand new caravan mover we'd had fitted a couple of weeks ago, nothing, nada, zip! So we had to try and get the 'van on to the car and off the drive ourselves, not easy given the angles and slope involved (which is one reason we got the mover in the first place!). We eventually managed to get it down onto the road, narrowly missing a lamppost by centimetres in the process! The roads were nice and clear so we had a nice drive up to the Stanmore Hall Caravan Park in Shropshire and were shown to our pitch by one of the wardens.

Having got ourselves plugged in and the water set up, we switched on the kitchen tap to check the system. I could hear this strange hissing sound which we'd never heard before. On checking its source we realised there was water fizzing out from the bottom of the shower unit in the bathroom. Fortunately there is a drain hole in the bottom of the shower tray so at least it had somewhere to go, but we use the cubicle for storage so this was not good! The only way we could get it to stop was to switch off the pump, which meant for several days of our stay we could only turn on the taps for a few seconds at a time! A few days later after much cursing at the caravan dealership who had just performed a service on the 'van and had fitted the mover and who were less than helpful when we rang them, hubby decided to take a look for himself and unscrewed the front of the unit, exposing all the pipework inside. When we turned the pump back on to see where the leak was coming from, guess what - no leak! He must have touched something when he took the cover off and whatever he did it stopped the leak. Well, that was so easy he decided to take a look at the mover.

On stripping the bunk seat which the gubbins for the mover was under hubby started peering in to the space. I was standing to one side and suddenly noticed what looked like a TV coaxial cable & plug sticking up in the air. Not far from it was a strange looking fitting with yellow and green colouring sticking out of the mover box. What's that? say I, that doesnt look right! After directing hubby to the mystery cable he tried sticking it in the mystery fitting and guess what, it fitted! So Bob's your uncle, Fannies your aunt, not only did we manage to sort out the water but also got the mover working - relieved is not the word for it!

Anyway despite our problems (and they say all bad things come in 3's!) we had a lovely long weekend. The Caravan Park was beautiful with a lovely big lake with lilies & ducks and immaculately maintained grounds. As well as a spotless shower block and washing up room. We toured round the area, visiting Bridgnorth a couple of times, as well as Shrewsbury, Ironbridge & Much Wenlock, all very pretty and historic, going back to medieval times, so lots to see and admire. Shropshire is a lovely county and May is a smashing month to visit.

We are now looking to our next holiday away in the caravan in July when we are off down to Devon and a site on the river just down from Dartmouth - can't wait!

Waking up to a Winter Wonderland in April!

We woke up to a real surprise this morning. Having let the dogs out before bed at 1am this morning with it raining a bit, imagine our surprise on getting up at 7am to find the place looking like something off a Christmas card. We must have had about 2 inches in just a few hours. They had given for some snow, but going on what we normally have here we had no idea it would be anything like this. It has been a glorious morning with blue skies & sun so although the snowing is thawing its just blowing off the trees and hedges rather than dripping. I have posted a few photos of the view from the back of the house to enjoy, click on the pics for a better view. (you may have to refresh your screen when you view these pics cause its returning people to the previous post rather than this one)
